June 26, 2003. I've been missing out on a lot of updates here, mostly because of being overwhelmed with baby things, I think. And now because it's very hot. Or, I don't know, maybe it's just normal hot (90 degrees) but it seems very hot to me. Someone suggested that this might be the only time when I'm actually hot enough to swim in the ocean in Maine, and I might just have to do that.

Anyway, so the biggest thing I've been neglecting to mention is that my mom and her friends threw me a fantastic baby shower two-and-a-half weeks ago. It was incredibly nice that all of these friends of my mom came and gave me an unbelievably nice pile of presents. I was fairly blown away. I got a lot of great clothes (we didn't have any) and books, and some things I really wanted, like a sling to carry the baby around in (though that wasn't from one of my mom's friends, but from my friend Jessica...I managed to convince some of my friends to come too).

Here's a picture from the shower:

Pretty much all of the shower photos are of me with some bag or box strategically placed in front of my belly, like I'm the character on some sitcom and they're trying to hide the fact that I'm pregnant. Like when Julia Louis-Dreyfus was pregnant on Seinfeld, and she was always behind a desk or carrying a hat or pillow in front of her. On the right of the photo you can see my friend Michelle's daughter Sarah, who had a great time helping me with the gifts, and putting used wrapping paper into a garbage bag. Sarah really helped mostly by diverting some of the attention away from me, so I didn't feel quite so much like I was on display.

What else has been going on? Oh, I know. I sold my car. This faithful old 1992 Subaru:

was the only car I'd ever had. My mom graciously (really, really graciously) offered to give me her newer Subaru, since she was getting a new car. My old car was starting to have some problems, so I was happy to move on to something newer, better, and, probably, safer. Looking at this photo, I have no idea why I'm parked three feet into the street.

Other than that, it's mostly really hot. The cats and I aren't sure what to do with ourselves. We're laying around a lot, complaining. Though they sure make me glad that I'm not covered in fur. And I can't really figure out what to wear. Enough complaining, Julie! I think I'll make some lemonade (the lemonade recipe on the last page of the latest Cooking Light is the best lemonade I have ever, ever, tasted).

June 17, 2003. When Peatie sleeps, he likes to have his back feet shoved up against something. When Theo sleeps, he likes to bury his face. I can't believe it took them this long to realize they could make each other happy:

sleeping position nirvana

Things are going well here, though I'm still overwhelmed by the thought that we're going to have a baby. I still have a lot of trouble getting my mind around the fact that it's going to be our kid, and not just some extended babysitting job. I'm at 32 weeks today, so I've only got eight more weeks to go. I'm realizing at this point that the reality of the situation probably won't sink in until after the baby is actually born. Someone said something to me a few months ago along the lines of, "If you're 15% ready by the time you give birth, you're doing pretty well." That sounds about right to me.

In other news, I finished a pair of socks.

June 10, 2003. Sorry it's been a while since I updated. My life suddenly seems very busy with baby preparations. For instance, this week we have a two-hour birthing class, I'm going to a breastfeeding class, we're going to tour the hospital, and I have my two-hour midwife group. Plus I suddenly realized that maybe I should clear out a corner somewhere in the house for the baby. So I'm spending this week locating a suitable corner. Heh.

But since you've all been waiting so patiently for an update, I give you a picture of the pregnant me:

pregnant

This was a week and a half ago, at our friends Siobhan and Joe's wedding, and I'm with our friends Ian and Ellen. Anyway, so that's what I look like at seven-and-a-half months pregnant. Give or take. I don't know if you can factor in the large amount of yummy food I'd been eating in the hours preceding this picture.
